Synopsis:

International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and World Health Organization (WHO) released a report stating the truth in radiation exposure through cell phones that could lead to cancer. Both IARC and WHO recommended the use of hands-free devices, which was seconded by a Jabra- Lindberg International survey conducted last April 2011.

A World Health Organization (WHO)/Interactional Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) report revealed that consumers have potential health risks in using their cell phones. Grounded on the concept that cell phone transmit radiation, which is possibly carcinogenic. This is also based on the report that there is an increase in the brain cancer, malignant type cases, which are related to the use of wireless phones. And the ideal solution for this? Hands-free devices.

The truth is that this radiation warning will not have the total of 5 billion mobile phone subscribers avoid using their phones, basically because these devices have become a huge part of people’s everyday lives. But with the use of hands-free devices, this exposure to radiation can be decreased significantly. From the cell phone’s usual 2 watts, using Bluetooth™ hands-free devices can reduce it to 0.0025 watts and using the corded ones can reduce it to absolutely zero watts.

A Jabra-sponsored survey also shared their own findings, showing that people are not at all concerned about the radiation that using cell phones can bring about despite the impending risks. Conducted by Lindberg International in April 2011, the survey covers the online responses of a total of 2,518 consumers whose age range from 18 to 55 years old, residing in these following countries:

  • France
  • Germany
  • Japan
  • Russia
  • United States
  • United Kingdom

With the margin of error of +/- 1.95%, the survey consisted of results from the questions about the respondents’ awareness and their reactions about cell phone usage and the radiation it could cause, as well as the different effects of hands-free device usage. The results show that:

  • 25%: respondents said that radiation doesn’t concern them at all
  • 61%: said that it concerns them a little bit or to some extent

When they were provided with the knowledge that Bluetooth™ (wireless) headset could reduce radiation exposure, more than half of the respondents or 53% said that they would prefer to use hands-free devices if that is the case.

Jabra Mobile division Senior Vice President Anne Raaen Rasmussen discussed the subject and said, “People are concerned about radiation from their cell phones but they don’t care enough to stop using them and aren’t aware that being hands-free lowers the exposure. We are here to inform them that Jabra offers many hands-free devices that provide a solution for concerned consumers who want to lower their own or their children’s exposure to cell phone radiation.”
The Interactional Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) produced a press release recommending the use of headsets as solution in reducing radiation exposure. It stated, ”Given the potential consequences for public health of this classification and findings, it is important that additional research be conducted into the long‐term, heavy use of mobile phones. Pending the availability of such information, it is important to take pragmatic measures to reduce exposure such as hands‐free devices or texting."
